The sports court of the German football federation DFB on Tuesday handed down to Spanish midfielder Jose Rodriguez of Mainz club a five-game suspension from the Bundesliga for his brutal tackle against Augsburg defender Dominik Kohr in the game last Sunday.
Rodriguez, 21, must also pay a fine of 10,000 euros ($11,171) for his action, which caused the player from Augsburg severe injury with an open wound of about 14 centimetres, as reported by the club, reports Efe.
Kohr, 22, is now out of hospital after surgery, said Augsburg coach Dirk Schuster, the newspaper Sueddeutsche Zeitung reported.
Both Mainz and Rodriguez immediately apologised for the vicious foul.
Mainz coach Martin Schmidt announced the fine for the Spanish midfielder and said that his "stupid" action has robbed the club of its joy after their 3-1 victory against Augsburg in the season opener.
