Major earthquake hits Myanmar

A 7.1-magnitude earthquake hit Myanmar's northwestern part on Wednesday evening, the Myanmar Earthquake Committee said.

The epicentre of the quake -- that occurred at a depth of 122 km -- was seven km west of Kanbalu in Sagaing region and near Chindwin river bank, reports Xinhua news agency.

Eighteen areas in Myanmar, including Yangon, Ayeyawaddy, Rakhine, Kalay as well as Sittway, felt the quake.

No immediate report of casualties was available.
