A senior assistant director of the energy, green technology and water ministry in Malaysia was arrested for allegedly recruiting Malaysians into the Islamic State (IS).

"The official had also received funds to carry out activities in the country," said Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar, The Star reported.

"The funds were also used to send a man to Syria. More suspects, believed to be recruiters for IS, would be nabbed soon," Bakar added.

On Tuesday, 13 Malaysians, believed to be linked to the IS in Iraq, were arrested from several locations in Shah Alam, the capital of the western Selangor state in Malaysia.
