Amid speculation that governors appointed during the erstwhile UPA regime have been advised by the Narendra Modi government to resign, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee Tuesday met Governor M.K. Narayanan at Raj Bhavan here.

There was no official statement on what transpired at the meeting which lasted for about 15 minutes.

The Trinamool Congress, however, described the developments over governors being asked to resign as "unconstitutional".

Urban Development Minister Firhad Hakim said his party does not expect such behaviour from the new government at the centre.

"There is a constitutional obligation... one government goes and another comes, but we should not disturb the constitutional framework. I do not think it is appropriate," he told journalists here.

Hakim said constitutional posts like those of the governor "should not be disturbed".
