English football club Manchester City skipper Vincent Kompany has said the club has to "prove a point" this time after failing to retain the English Premier League title last season.
Kompany netted the third goal as City beat West Bromich Albion 3-0 in their opening game of the league for the 2015-16 season on Tuesday.
"Last season was below what we're used to doing," the 29-year-old was quoted as saying by bbc.co.uk on Monday.
"There are a lot of favourite teams now and we're not part of it, I've heard. It's something that gives us extra motivation," said the Belgian defender.
City, who finished second behind fellow English club Chelsea last season, dominated West Brom as Ivorian midfielder Yaya Toure scored a brace for his side followed by the strike from Kompany.
The win will give City immense boost ahead of their contest against defending champions Chelsea on Sunday.

"It will be a big game very early in the season," said Kompany.
"We can't go into it thinking it's about winning the league, but it will matter so we need to put in a great performance."
