A 45-year-old man was arrested on Wednesday on the charge of murdering a woman in the national capital, the Delhi Police said.

Kaushalya Devi, 40, was found murdered in a guest house close to Jama Masjid in old Delhi.

Devi of Jama Masjid locality worked in a local factory and was strangulated to death with a sash, police said.

Accused Maqbool, a native of Uttar Pradesh, was working as a casual labourer in Delhi.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Parmaditya said the police zeroed in on Maqbool as he and the woman checked into the guest house posing as husband and wife, around 10 a.m. on Sunday.

"The accused left the guest house room at 2 p.m. on the pretext of getting a photocopy of his wife's identification proof," he said.

"Earlier, he submitted his Aadhar card for identity verification to the guest house staff," the DCP said.

His questioning revealed that he had a 10-year-long relationship with the victim, who was pressing him for marriage.

An argument broke out between them in the guest house room, during which he strangulated her with her sash and fled, police said.
