A man was shot at and over two dozen shops set afire on Thursday during violence in Uttar Pradesh's Fatehpur town, police said.
Several rounds were fired by some miscreants in Daraganj and Qazitola localities of the town following which violence-hit localities were cordoned off.
The violence was reported while Vishwa Hindu Parishad leader Praveen Togadia was addressing a 'Hindu Sammelan' at Ram Talai temple on Thursday.
He was escorted by police officials to Ghatampur, from where he was sent to Kanpur amid tight security.
Police said the district magistrate and superintendent of police were camping in the area to prevent the violence from spreading.
The official said several women were injured earlier as a religious march by women headed for the congregation was pelted with stones. Officials however brokered peace and ensured the march continued peacefully.
