A man stabbed two people, reportedly his mother and sister, and wounded a third person on a street in a Paris suburb before being killed by the police.

The Interior Ministry said that the victims were relatives of the man and the police were looking into reports of it being a family quarrel, the BBC reported.

According to some reports, the man threatened to kill the police and shouted "Allahu Akbar" ("God is greatest" in Arabic) during the assault, which occurred in Trappes, a commune in the Yvelines department to the southwest of the French capital.

The Islamic State group claimed responsibility for the attack but offered no proof.

"Police operation completed," said the Yvelines regional prefect in a tweet. "An individual was neutralized and killed. Assessment of the victims: 2 people dead, one seriously injured," it added.

France's Interior Minister Gerard Collomb expressed his condolence to the victims and their families and thanked the police for their response.
