A man of Asian origin fired multiple gunshots outside the Consulate General of China in Los Angeles before shooting himself dead, police said.

The shooting took place about 6 a.m. on Tuesday but did not injure anyone else.

The man in his 60s was found dead in his vehicle parked 20 meters away from the consulate building, Xinhua news agency quoted police as saying.

The police have not identified the man yet. They found a bullet wound on his chin, saying he could commit suicide.

Consulate officials told Xinhua the man was not Chinese.

A security guard at the consulate said the gunman shot 17 bullets at the building before killing himself in his car.

The consulate general has expressed serious concerns about the shooting incident and urged the US authorities to take all necessary measures to protect the safety of its diplomats.
