A man was arrested here for hatching his own abduction conspiracy and making ransom calls to his family for his release, police said Monday.

Mandeep, 24, was arrested Sunday from the Ganesh Nagar area in east Delhi where he was holed up in the rented accommodation of his friend Jitender, 24.

Jitender was also nabbed for helping Mandeep.

"To repay debts taken for share market investment, Mandeep hatched his own kidnap conspiracy. He left home May 31 and hid in the house of his friend from where he made a Rs.5 lakh ransom call to his brother for his release," said Additional Commissioner of Police Alok Kumar.

He made calls to his brother in male and female voices while posing as the kidnapper.

"Mandeep was arrested after tracking his mobile phone location," the police officer said.

Mandeep had promised Jitender 40 percent of the ransom money for his help.

"Jitender agreed to help as he needed money for his marriage with his girlfriend. Jitender took him to his rented place in Ganesh Nagar and arranged a mobile phone which had the software to convert a male voice to that of a female, an old man, a child and also of a robot," the officer said.
