Police on Thursday shot dead one of the gunmen who murdered a constable the previous night here in Uttar Pradesh.
Police said on Wednesday night three drunken criminals barged into the Banthla police post in Ghaziabad district and shot dead constable Sudesh Yadav, 28, after a dispute.
The row reportedly arose over the recovery of some articles during a raid conducted two days earlier.
But some sources said the criminals became enraged when the constable refused them drinking water and opened fire from close range.
A police officer said the criminals were tracked down in Chirori village. A gun battle followed, leading to the death of one of the men. Two others escaped.
The dead man was identified as Gyasi alias Om Prakash, Superintent of Police R.P. Pandey said.
Meanwhile, the body of constable Yadav was handed over to his family after a police guard of honour on Thursday morning. He was cremated in his Mainpuri district.
