English football club Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger urged the team's restless fans to stand behind their players and not worry about why the team failed to sign big names this season.

Arsenal made enquires for both Real Madrid's Karim Benzema and Paris Saint-Germain's Edinson Cavani during the summer transfer window but, amid pressure from supporters to add another centre-forward, Wenger ultimately decided that there were no available options of sufficient quality.

In Olivier Giroud, Theo Walcott, Alexis Sanchez and Danny Welbeck, Wenger is also confident that his existing players are good enough for Arsenal to seriously challenge to win what would be their first Premier League title since 2004, reports telegraph.co.uk.

"These players have experience, they are 25, 26 years old and they know the job. They know what to do, they are ambitious, they have the quality as well to support the club and support the team," Wenger said.

"It is not always expecting someone coming down from heaven to sort out all your problems. Support is believing in the players in the squad. This is a good opportunity to do that for our supporters."

The Arsenal Supporters' Trust reacted to the failure to sign anyone other than goalkeeper Petr Cech with a statement that called for a review of the club's transfer strategy.

Wenger believes that he has improved the team this summer, both by adding a goalkeeper of Cech's stature and also keeping a young squad together that finished strongest in Premier League last year.

"I have made more than 300 transfers and every time it's a decision: Do you buy the player because he strengthens his squad or not?" the manager said.

"The solutions we had were not convincing at all. In the end you do not buy to give one hope, you want to buy because the players who come in can help your squad to be stronger. You have to find an efficient solution."
