Anti-apartheid icon and South Africa's first black president Nelson Mandela was Sunday discharged from the hospital in Pretoria where he was receiving treatment since June, the president's office said.
The 95-year-old Mandela will continue his recovery at home, CNN reported.
"Madiba's (Mandela's clan name) condition remains critical and is at times unstable," President Jacob Zuma's office was quoted as saying.
"Nevertheless, his team of doctors are convinced that he will receive the same level of intensive care at his Houghton home that he received in Pretoria," it added.
The Nobel Peace Prize laureate has been suffering from a recurring lung infection as a result of tuberculosis developed when he was imprisoned for 27 years during the apartheid.
"During his stay in hospital from June 8, the condition of our former president vacillated between serious to critical and at times unstable. Despite the difficulties imposed by his various illnesses, he, as always, displays immense grace and fortitude," the office said.
Since Mandela was rushed to hospital, the presidency has repeatedly declared his condition as critical but stable.
On Saturday, media reports said Mandela was discharged from hospital, but the government then refuted the claim.
