The district administration of Mandsaur in Madhya Pradesh on Thursday denied permission to Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi to pay a visit to the violence-hit area where five agitating farmers were killed in police firing on Tuesday.
After being denied permission, Gandhi decided to take the Rajasthan road route to enter Mandsaur. However, police have barricaded the routes from Rajasthan to Madhya Pradesh, an officer said.
Gandhi's visit comes as the Madhya Pradesh farmers agitation entered its eighth day on Thursday. The peasants have been on strike since June 1, demanding loan waiver and fair price for their produce.
Gandhi reached Udaipur by flight. He planned to reach Mandsaur by road via Nayagaon, Congress State President Arun Yadav told IANS.
The Congress Vice President was earlier scheduled to reach Mandsaur via Indore.
Several areas including Mandsaur, Ratlam and Neemuch, Bhopal, Jhabua, Ujjain have witnessed tension following the police firing on agitating farmers.
