A number of people were killed Wednesday when masked gunmen opened fire at the Paris office of a French satirical magazine that had tweeted a cartoon of Islamic State leader, BBC said.

Witnesses spoke of sustained gunfire at the office of Charlie Hebdo as the attackers fired from assault rifles, BBC reported.

The weekly has courted controversy in the past with its depiction of news and current affairs. Its latest tweet was a cartoon of the Islamic State leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.
