Maoists Saturday dug up a road close to a bridge in Odisha's Malkangiri district to prevent movement of security forces, police said.

About 40 armed rebels reached near the bridge between Padia and Kalimela around 3 a.m. and dug up the road using spades and iron rods, Superintendent of Police Akhileswar Singh told IANS.

"They created a five-foot-long pit on the road. Steps are being taken to repair it. They, however, caused no harm to the bridge," he added.

Maoists are active in more than half of the state's 30 districts. Malkangiri is considered their stronghold.

Earlier this week, the rebels had blown up a block office building in Padia village, about 700 km from Bhubaneswar.
