Maoist guerrillas Thursday set fire to a van carrying food items for police in Odisha, an official said.

About two dozen rebels intercepted the van inside the Sunabeda sanctuary, about 550 km from here, in Nuapada district and asked the driver to get down and then set fire to the vehicle, a senior police official told IANS.

The van was on its way from the district headquarters to a camp of the Special Operations Group personnel, a state anti-naxal police force, he said.

Maoists are active in more than half of Odisha and the district is considered one of their strongholds.
