The Uttar Pradesh government on Monday transferred the district magistrate and senior superintendent of police of Mathura, where widespread violence occurred during an anti-encroachment drive last week.

An official said that District Magistrate Rajesh Kumar and Senior Superintendent of Police Rakesh Singh have been shifted out of Mathura for dereliction in duty during the operations and intelligence failure. Their replacements are Nikhil Shukla and Babloo Kumar respectively.

Sources say Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav was miffed at the officials for having not only "erred big time on intelligence prior to the Jawaharbagh incident but also failing badly in controlling the situation there after".

A total of 24 persons, including the Superintendent of Police, City, Mukul Dwivedi and Sub-Inspector Santosh Yadav were killed in the clash between cult members who had encroached upon the government park and the police force.

The Divisional Commissioner, Aligarh, has been appointed to head a probe into the incidents and investigate the police lapses and administrative failures, if any, during the Jawaharbagh incident.
