A 21-year-old mechanic died and four other people, including three Delhi University employees, were injured after the compressor of an air-conditioner exploded in the South Campus premises of Delhi University while being filled Friday afternoon, police said.
The incident took place around 3 p.m. inside the biotechnology block of the South Campus.
"Shakeel was filling gas in the air conditioner when its air compressor exploded," said a police official.
"He died on the spot while his helper and three other Delhi University employees received minor injuries. The injured were rushed to a nearby hospital from where they were released after first aid," he said.
Delhi University expressed regret over the accident.
"One mechanic employed on behalf of the outsourced company for the maintenance died in this unfortunate accident and his coworker received injury along with university's three lab employees. The employees came back to the work after first aid," said a Delhi University official.
