Meghalaya government employees on Friday demanded a pay hike at par with the 7th Central Pay Commission's recommendations.
"We want the state government to implement the pay revision at par with the central government and the pay hike with effect from January 1, 2016," Meghalaya State Government Employees Federation (MSGEF) president Maxmilian Lyngdoh told journalists after a council meeting.
The federation, which is a conglomerate of 36 state government associations, said a sub-committee would soon be set up to study the report of the 7th Central Pay Commission and other relevant reports of other states and then submit its suggestions to the Meghalaya government.
"We leave it to the wisdom of the government to decide and how to implement our demand, but what we want is, the revision of pay should be par with the central government," he said.
Strongly opposed the extension of service of retired government employees, including officials, Lyngdoh said the extension of service to retired government employees as well as re-employment of retired government officials has affected the promotional avenues for the existing employees.
"In some cases, the re-employed people were made even to occupy higher position whereas in-service people, continue to serve in the lower post," he said.
