Meghalaya's principal opposition party, the United Democratic Party on Friday sought Prime Minister Narendra Modi's intervention to increase the withdrawal cash limited from the banks ahead of the Christmas celebrations across India.

"We request your good office to kindly consider this plea, which will only strengthen the support for your progressive programmes," UDP legislator Jemino Mawthoh said in a letter to Modi.

Mawthoh, who is also the general secretary of UDP, said the present restrictions put forth by the NDA government needs to be relaxed in a manner that would ease the dispensation of cash from banks and also an increase on the withdrawal limit, which in turn, will not deprive the citizens from ending this year on an otherwise blossoming note.

"I write to request your good office to kindly intervene at this juncture on account of the festive season that is being widely celebrated and more so for Christian populated states like ours, where in the spirit of giving and forgiving, expenses are high to meet age old customs of celebration and gifting," he added.
