German luxury car giant Mercedes-Benz will recall 10,558 vehicles in China over defective airbags, Beijing's quality watchdog said on Monday.

The affected vehicles were manufactured between January 12, 2007, and December 30, 2008, involving C-class and GLK models of year 2008-2009, the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine said in a statement.

The automaker said a control unit in the vehicles' airbags may fail to work and the airbags may open even when the cars are not in collisions, Xinhua news agency reported.

The company will replace the defective parts free of charge from March 7, 2016.
