Mexico began their Gold Cup title defence with an easy 3-1 win over El Salvador at Qualcomm Stadium here.

Coach Luis Paez's team opened the scoring on Sunday on a goal by Hedgardo Marin just eight minutes into the match, reports Efe.

El Salvador's Nelson Bonilla made it 1-1 just two minutes later, giving the Central American team some short-lived hope.

The Salvadoran squad's quick answer prompted Mexico to press harder, and Elias Hernandez made it a 2-1 score for the defending champions in the 29th minute.

Orbelin Pineda added a goal in the 55th minute to make it 3-1 and seal the win for Mexico.

Mexico's next opponent in Group C will be Jamaica, the team it beat for the title in 2015, at Sports Authority Field in Denver on July 13.

El Salvador will play Curaçao, which was beaten by Jamaica 2-0 on Sunday at Qualcomm Stadium.
