Mexico's drug cartel kingpin Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman fled from the security forces' reach during a recent operation to recapture him, the government said.

In order to avoid his recapture on Friday, Guzman beat a hasty retreat and injured his leg and face, Xinhua reported quoting a government statement.

The statement also mentioned that "these injuries were not the product of a direct clash", without providing detailed information.

Guzman, leader of the Sinaloa drug cartel, escaped from the maximum-security Altiplano prison outside Mexico City on July 11 through a 1.5-km tunnel under his cell.

In the past few weeks, the search operations for the fugitive drug lord focussed on the northwestern part of the country, the statement said.

The government said that it will continue the operations to nab Guzman back.
