Panic gripped people in several parts of Odisha, including state capital Bhubaneswar, as mild tremors were felt on Wednesday afternoon.

Tremors were felt at about 4.08 pm in several areas of the state including Cuttack, Bhubaneswar, Balasore, Bhadrak and Jajpur, Dhenkanal, Nayagarh, Paradip, Rourkela and Berahmpur.

People rushed out of their houses and offices in Bhubaneswar and Cuttack as tremors were felt at least twice in the afternoon.

However, there has been no loss of life and damage to property.

"I felt back-to-back tremors within seconds. I immediately came out after I realised that the building had started shaking," said Hrudananda Sahu, a resident of Bhubaneswar.

Sarat Sahu, director of Bhubaneswar Met department, said the epicentre of the earthquake has been traced to central Myanmar and it measured 6.8 on the Richter scale there.

Tremors were also felt across the country including Bihar, West Bengal and Tripura.

Met department sources said the sea was likely to be rough at certain places including Puri where waves rising up to three metres were expected.
