Union Minister Mansukh Mandaviya has called for connecting the northeastern region with the rest of the country through waterways, an official said on Friday.

During his two-day visit to Kolkata and Haldia, the Minister of State for Shipping directed the officials of the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) to work in that direction, an official statement said.

On Thursday, he inspected the facilities and ongoing projects at Kolkata Port Trust and GR Jetty of IWAI.

During his visit, Mandaviya also reviewed the ongoing projects of Road Transport and Highways Ministry and the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) in West Bengal.

He directed the officers to expedite the works of delayed projects and address land acquisition matters in close coordination with the concerned Revenue Officers for timely completion of the projects.
