The death of a minor girl, who was allegedly raped, triggered protests as irate locals ransacked the house of the purported perpetrator of the crime in West Bengal's South 24 Parganas district on Sunday.
Family members and neighbours of the girl, a student of Class 10, accused police of refusing to register a rape case despite receiving a complaint. The incident took place in Kakdwip.
The family members even refused to perform the last rites unless police launched a rape case against the accused, who has been taken into custody on murder charge only.
Senior district police officers rushed to the spot to pacify the mob and assured that sexual assault charges would also be slapped on the accused.
A police officer said they would move the court on Monday for including charges of sexual assault also against the accused.
A 24-hour strike has also been called in Kakdwip on Monday in protest against the incident.
