Some parts of the northern Indian hill state of Uttarakhand were on Tuesday jolted by a minor earthquake measuring 4.8 on the Richter scale, an official said.
The temblor was felt in Pithoragarh, Haldwani and some parts of the tourist hub of Nainital. There was no loss of life or damage to property, an official told IANS.
Disaster management teams were on the stand-by for any eventuality that might arise due to the aftershocks that seismologists have predicted.
The state government has asked the people not to panic.
Uttarakhand is an active seismic zone and has experienced many quakes in the past.
