An angry mob early Thursday lynched four young men as they were found drinking alcohol at Tatimara in Chandrapur in Guwahati, Assam.

"The incident took place around 4 a.m. today. We have collected video footage of the whole incident. Some locals beat the boys black and blue with bamboo sticks and damaged their vehicle, after finding them drinking alcohol," Senior Superintendent of Police (City) A.P. Tiwari said.

The city police also took action against men from the force who were witness to the whole incident but failed to act.

"The whole incident took place in front of the police team and the policemen remained mute spectators," Tiwari said.

One sub-inspector (SI) level officer who witnessed the incident was suspended. The commandant of the 4th Assam Police Task Force has been asked to initiate action against three of his men who were also at the site of the incident, but failed to intervene.

Sub-Inspector Hareswar Handique of the Pragjyotishpur police station near the city and three jawans were mute spectators to the violence, police said.

"This is inhumane. The official and the three jawans have failed to handle the situation. They were found to have lack of confidence and lack of professional approach in fulfilling their duty," Tiwari said.

Tiwari added that a show-cause notice would be served to the suspended official. He also said efforts were on to identify the local people responsible for lynching the four young men.
