Six mobile phones and nine SIM cards were recovered Saturday from inmates of the district jail in Bhondsi here, police said.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Raj Kumar and his team conducted a raid on the barracks of Bhondsi jail.

Maximum phones and SIMs were recovered from the inmates of block 6B of the jail.

It was the third time in less than three months that mobiles were recovered from inmates.

Prisoners of block 6B - Sahun, Shokeen, Saddam and Aslam - have been booked for keeping mobile phones and SIM cards. Two mobiles and three SIMs were recovered from them.

Mobiles and SIMs were also found in blocks 11B, 10, 18, 7B, 5B and 2B.

Vikas, inmate of block 17, had a burnt mobile on him.

"All the accused inmates have been booked under section 42 of the Prisons Act," chief of Bhondsi police station, Varun Dahiya, told IANS.

Over 100 phones and SIM cards were recovered from Bhondsi jail inmates during 2013, with nearly 50 mobiles phones and more than 60 SIM cards found since October this year.

Director general of Haryana Police directed (in the second week of October) the Crime Branch to carry out a high-level inquiry to find how cellphones are smuggled into jails.

The inmates manage to smuggle in phones despite the different layers of security in the jail. But the most important of these - installation of jammers - are not in place yet.
