Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in the Fiji capital early Wednesday, the first Indian prime minister to visit Fiji in 33 years.

Modi was received at the airport by Prime Minister Bainimarama. Former prime minister Indira Gandhi was the last Indian prime minister to visit Fiji in 1981.

The prime minister is to be accorded a traditional welcome ceremony at Albert Park in Suva. He will also address the parliament during his day-long visit.

Modi and Bainimarama are expected to address the media after inking of some MoUs. Modi is to later address a forum with Pacific Island leaders after noon. While Modi is visiting Fiji Nov 19, Chinese President Xi Jinping's visit is scheduled Nov 21.

Fiji is the final leg of Modi's three-nation 10-day tour. He visited Myanmar and Australia before arriving in Fiji.
