Greeting the nation on Christmas, Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his radio address on Sunday said that it is the occasion to give importance to service, sacrifice and compassion in life.

"Jesus Christ said that poor don't need our favour but our acceptance," Modi said in his monthly radio address 'Mann Ki Baat'.

Quoting the Gospel of St. Luke, Modi said Jesus not only did serve the poor but also appreciated the service done by poor.

"This is real empowerment," Modi added.

Recalling one of the legends of Christ, the Prime Minister narrated the story where Jesus standing by the temple treasury saw a poor widow offering two copper coins amid expensive offering by the rich.

"Christ said that the donation by the widow was greatest because others despite huge offerings merely gave a fraction of what they owned but the widow gave her entire possessions," Modi said.
