Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Tuesday congratulated Justin Trudeau on winning the Canadian parliamentary elections.
Modi tweeted: "Congratulations @JustinTrudeau for victory in Canadian parliamentary elections."
"We attach high priority to close ties with Canada. We share a strong bond of democracy and inclusiveness enriched by a vibrant Indian diaspora," he said in another tweet.
The young Liberal Party Trudeau won the parliamentary elections on Monday night, bringing the nine-year reign of Prime Minister Stephen Harper and his Conservative Party to an end.
Trudeau, who will be 44 on December 25, will become Canada's second-youngest prime minister. Joe Clark was the youngest prime minister of Canada, assuming office on June 4, 1979, at the age of 39.
