Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday spoke to United National Front (UNF) leader Ranil Wickremesinghe and congratulated him on the "wonderful performance" of his alliance in the parliamentary elections in Sri Lanka.
According to a release from the Prime Minister's Office, Modi hoped that the bilateral ties between India and Sri Lanka will get stronger under Wickremesinghe's leadership.
"Spoke to Ranil Wickremesinghe and congratulated him on his alliance's wonderful performance in the elections. I am confident that under Wickremesinghe's leadership, bilateral ties between India and Sri Lanka will get stronger," the prime minister said.
"I extend my heartfelt congratulations to the people of Sri Lanka on the peaceful conduct of polls," he added.
Sri Lanka's ruling UNF on Tuesday secured 106 seats in the 225-member parliament, seven short of majority.
