Mohun Bagan exit Fed Cup with win

Defender Kingshuk Debnath scored a 74-minute goal to help Mohun Bagan bow out of the Federation Cup football tournament with a 1-0 win against Shillong Lajong at the Tilak Maidan here Tuesday.

Mohun Bagan were already knocked out of the competition after their 1-4 loss against Salgaocar FC. Shillong Lajong were also out, losing all their four Group B matches after Tuesday's defeat. Mohun Bagan managed to win only once in their four group matches, drawing twice and losing once.

Haitian forward Sony Norde Mohun Bagan's brightest star on the pitch, creating chances and feeding inch-perfect balls to the strikers Jeje Lalpekhlua and Balwant Singh, but profligacy continued to hamper their prospects in a Group B match.

 

Mohun Bagan were awarded a penalty in the 26th minute but Jeje missed muffled the chance as goal keeper Vishal Kaith denied the Kolkata giants the lead.

Mohun Bagan intensified the pressure but failed to score. But it changed in the 74th minute.

Mohun Bagan were awarded a free kick from a threatening position and defender Bello Rasaq's shot, from a Norde centre, was saved by Kaith. The rebound fell kindly for Debnath who made no mistake.

Both the teams were already knocked out of the tournament.
