Monchengladbach were held to a 1-1 draw by Mainz while Wolfsburg carved out a 1-0 win over Augsburg to close the seventh round of Bundesliga football.
Wasteful Monchengladbach gave away a lead and failed to utilise their golden chances in the closing period as Mainz staged a well-positioned defence over ninety minutes Sunday, reports Xinhua.
The undefeated "Foals" dominated the game for most of the time and opened the scoring in the 15th minute as Max Kruse completed a combination inside the box.
With the lead behind Monchengladbach pressed for the second goal but it were the visitors that levelled the scores against the run of the game at the 31st minute. A handball inside the box by Julian Korb allowed Mainz' Jonas Hofmann to restore parity from the spot.
Mainz lacked in offensive actions but staged a bulwark to give Monchengladbach a hard time. However, the hosts were able to create two golden opportunities in the closing period. But, neither Thorgan Hazard nor Raffael was capable to score the decider with only Mainz goalkeeper Loris Karius to beat.
With the result Monchengladbach failed to reduce Bayern's lead in the standings meanwhile Mainz slipped to the sixth place.
