Monsoon to hit Odisha coast by June 8

The south-west monsoon will hit the Odisha coast by June 8, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Saturday said.

"The onset of south-west monsoon will take place over Andaman and Nicobar Island in the next 3-4 days and it would hit the Odisha coast by June 8," said Mamata Yadav, director-in-charge, Bhubaneswar Met department.

She also said that the state would experience rainfall after May 18 under the impact of low pressure formed over south-west Bay of Bengal off the Sri Lankan coast.

She said the low pressure would intensify into a depression in the next 48 hours.

Meanwhile, nine places in the state have recorded temperature above 40 degree Celsius out of which 7 saw mercury hovering above 42 degrees Celsius, while, several parts of the state received rainfall during the evening.

 

The highest temperature of 44.6 degrees Celsius was recorded at Blangir followed by Talcher at 43.8 degrees and Sundargarh at 43 degrees. The state government has confirmed death of 18 people due to sunstroke.

In 77 cases out of total 181 reports of alleged death due sun-stroke received from different sources, the death is found to have occurred due to other reasons, said a statement from the special relief commissioner.
