Taking note of a family in Madhya Pradesh's Katni being forced to carry the body of an elderly relative on their shoulders as no hearse was available at the hospital, the state Human Rights Commission on Tuesday issued notice to district officials, an official said.
The commission's spokesman L.R. Sisodia said that in the recent incident, the elderly woman died at a community health centre in Katni and since no ambulance was available, the body had to be carried home by the family members.
The commission has sought a report on the incident from the District Magistrate and the Chief Medical Officer. It has also sought information on how many official and semi-official hearses are available and where they are deployed.
