The government on Tuesday said that Mumbai Port has set a new record for shipment of automobiles on a single ship.
According to the Ministry of Shipping, Mumbai Port set the new record by shipping 6,316 cars on a single cargo vessel on its new berth "OCT-2".
"This is a quantum jump over the previous record of shipment of 5,376 cars," the ministry said in a statement.
"The ship M.V. HOEGH ST PETERSBERG berthed on 6th August 2016 and sailed on 9th August 2016 with 6,316 cars' shipment mainly consisting of 3,115 cars of General Motors and 3,093 cars of Volkswagen and exported mostly to Mexico."
The statement said that Mumbai Port Trust has been consistently contributing to the 'Make in India' campaign by facilitating the export of 'Made in India' cars.
"Mumbai Port has been focusing on the export and handling of cars and has emerged as number one port on the west coast of India growing at about 25 per cent for last few years," the statement added.

"It is committed to improve the facilities and help reducing the cost of handling cargoes."
