A Meghalaya Police constable, accused of shooting his senior in the West Jaintia Hills district, has surrendered without depositing his service rifle, police said on Friday.
Constable Lusen Sangma of the 3rd Meghalaya Police Battalion, surrendered at Kharkutta police station on Thursday after absconding for four days, district police chief R. Muthu told IANS.
Muthu said Sangma has been arrested on charges of murder and in an arms case.
"He came empty handed and stated that the self-loading rifle he decamped with has been dropped somewhere. We are searching for the rifle now," the officer said.
On Sunday, Sangma in an inebriated state fired at Havildar Litsingh Inghi from close range. Inghi succumbed on his way to the hospital.
