Defending champion Andy Murray produced a superb display against Tomas Berdych on Friday for a place in the Madrid Open tennis semi-finals.

Second seed Murray recorded his fourth straight win over eighth seed Berdych, the 2012 finalist, by winning 92 per cent of his first service points and hitting 20 winners in a 6-3, 6-2 victory over 76 minutes.

"It was obviously a good match," said Murray after the match.

"No break points against me. It was different conditions playing under the roof. But I adjusted well to them. That was the most pleasing thing for me. I've only played maybe three or four indoor clay matches in my life... The past few times I've played against him, I've played good matches. I've been motivated."

Murray will next play fifth seed Rafael Nadal, the four-time former champion, who Murray beat in last year's final, or Joao Sousa on Saturday.
