Flamboyant pop musician Prince died at his home in Minnesota on Thursday, media reports said. He was 57.

However, there was no formal announcement yet as officials at the spot said they had to notify family first.

According to BBC, police were called to a medical emergency at Prince's Paisley Park estate earlier on Thursday. An investigation was underway.

According to CNN, police were investigating a death at the estate of Prince in Carver County in Minnesota but were still not disclosing the identity of the person.

"We are not releasing any information regarding the identity of the person who died until next of kin is notified," it quoted Carver County Sheriff spokesman Jason Kamerud as saying.

Prince Rogers Nelson became a global superstar in the 1980s, with albums such as "1999", "Purple Rain" and "Sign O' the Times".

He sold more than 100 million records during his career.

A singer, songwriter, arranger and multi-instrumentalist, Prince recorded more than 30 albums. His best known hits include "Let's Go Crazy" and "When Doves Cry".

In 2004, Prince was inducted into the Rock and Roll of Fame.

Last week, he was rushed to hospital just hours after performing on stage, but was soon released.

Earlier this month, Prince said he was not feeling well, and cancelled at least one concert in Atlanta, CNN reported citing the Atlanta Journal Constitution.

Some days later, he took the stage in Atlanta to perform. The singer's spokesperson Yvette Noel-Schure had told CNN at the time: "He is fine and at home."
