Union Law and Justice Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad on Saturday said Muslim women voted for the BJP during the just concluded Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections because the party raised the issue of triple talaq.
Speaking at the convocation of the Gujarat National Law University (GNLU) here, Prasad said no political party or prominent women leaders like Mayawati, Dimple Yadav or Priyanka Gandhi spoke of the issue which worried Muslim women.
This has nothing to do with religion but it is a question of the rights of Muslim women, he said.
"Just because we expressed concern for them, Muslim women voted for us. This was a key reason for the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) victory in Uttar Pradesh," the Union Minister said.
When asked about building the Ram Temple in Ayodhya, he said, "The temple will be built at the same place where Ram lalla's idol has been installed."
Triple talaq is an Islamic practice where a man can divorce his wife by saying "talaq," the Arabic word for divorce, three times.
