Myanmar's Union Parliament on Wednesday approved the country's first-ever TV and broadcast bill, opening the doors for the private sector to run television stations, information ministry secretariat told Xinhua.

The bill will be forwarded to President U Thein Sein for endorsement, said secretariat of the Ministry of Information U Tint Swe.

After the approval of the president, a nine-member council will be formed to draft the by-laws of the bill -- a task which is expected to be over in six months to one year, U Tint Swe added.

"More private broadcasters will emerge as the bill is approved, " U Khaing Maung Yee, a parliamentarian said.
