Myanmar will join all member states of the UN to support the organisation in implementing its Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) by 2015 and beyond, President U Thein Sein said Thursday.
"While progress has been achieved in implementing these goals, new challenges are also emerging with time and under changing circumstances," Xinhua quoted U Thein Sein as saying in his message on the occasion of celebrating the 68th anniversary of UN Day.
There is need for the UN to be responsive to these challenges in the future and be better positioned to meet these expectations, he said.
Underlining that the historic implementation of the UN MDGs helps save millions of the poor from severe poverty, he, however, emphasised the need to continue and intensify the development efforts beyond 2015 through sustainable development.
He called for redoubling efforts in disaster-risk reduction and preparedness for disaster to deter adverse consequences for development.
He also called for closer attention to mitigating the impact of climate change, education for women and health for children.
