Naidu raises Indian fishermen issue with Sri Lanka

Union Minister for Urban Development M. Venkaiah Naidu Tuesday raised the issue of detention of Indian fishermen in international waters with Sri Lanka, an official release said here.

Naidu, who is here to attend the 5th Plenary Session of Asia Pacific Ministerial Conference of Housing and Urban Development, met Wimal Weerawansa, Minister for Construction Engineering Services, Housing and Common Amenities of Sri Lanka, and raised with him the issue of detention of Indian fishermen in international waters.

He also raised the issue of the recent death penalty given to five Indian fishermen by a Sri Lankan court.

The minister emphasised that he was neither complaining nor interfering in the internal issues of Sri Lanka but conveying sensitivities of Indian people.

 

Naidu also held a number of bilateral meetings with his counterparts from countries like Iran, Iraq, the Maldives and Bangladesh.
