Palma di Majorca (Spain), Oct 28 (IANS/AKI) Naples mafia fugitive Andrea Ricci was detained on the Spanish island of Majorca after Italian authorities issued an international warrant for his arrest, police said on Friday.
Ricci was arrested at a popular restaurant in the island's capital, Palma di Majorca late on Tuesday after two years on the run.
Anti-mafia investigators accuse Ricci and two Italian inland revenue officials of defrauding the European Union of more than eight million euros of unpaid VAT on luxury cars imported from Germany to Italy.
Ricci is the trusted henchman of Ciro Smiraglia, nephew of late Camorra boss Michele Zaza, a business partner in the scam, investigators claim.
Police impounded from Ricci three hotels and a restaurant in Rome, several companies and a fleet of new cars worth eight million euros as restitution for the tax scam.
Ricci had been living on Majorca where he developed property and ran a holiday letting business. Several relations had recently joined him there to help out, according to police.
