The wife of former Maldives president Mohamed Nasheed on Thursday said she fears for the life of her husband, who is currently serving a 13-year jail sentence on terrorism charges.
The former first lady, Laila Ali, has written to President Abdulla Yameen pleading that no harm should come to her husband.
Laila Ali said she has been receiving information about "plots to murder" her husband since he was arrested on February 22.
She said she had "new information from very credible sources about a serious conspiracy" to murder the former president, according to raajje.mv news site.
She said the concerns have now been forwarded to Yameen, former president Maumoon Abdula Qayoom and Home Minister Umar Naseer.
Laila Ali told reporters that she received the information on Wednesday morning, and since then she has been in a state of nervousness.

She said she asked the government for assurances for the safety of the president even if it was in writing, if not in action.
She said the information received revealed a plot to hang the former president in his jail cell, with a note stating that he committed suicide unable to cope with the 13 year jail sentence.
She also said another version stated that he was going to be abducted like the missing journalist Ahmed Rilwan, according to raajje.mv.
