BJP president Amit Shah on Wednesday accused former prime minister Manmohan Singh of not stopping others from indulging in corruption during his regime due to which the nation has suffered a loss of about Rs.12 lakh crore.

"I believe that a prime minister's responsibility is not limited to not doing corruption himself but to also ensure that others are not allowed to do corruption. He has to root out corruption from the system," Shah told reporters here.

"The nation has suffered loss to the tune of Rs.12 lakh crore during Singh's regime. How can the Congress run away from this responsibility," Shah asked.

The BJP president also sought answers from the Congress for its zero-loss theory in spectrum and coal allocations, and alleged that the UPA government looted the national treasury.

"Those who had floated zero-loss theory need to be made answerable now. They should accept that there were scams and they looted the nation's wealth," Shah said.

"By auctioning 229 coal blocks, more than Rs.two lakh crore have been added to the nation's treasury. This shows that there was a tremendous loss before," he added.

Shah also raised questions about the CAG's estimate of loss in coal auction by saying that, under the BJP government, coal auction of 20 mines has generated Rs.2 lakh crore. This shows that heavy losses were incurred.

"The loss was more than what was estimated by the CAG," he added.

Earlier in the day, Manmohan Singh charged the Modi government with harping on corruption to divert the people's attention towards non-issues.
