Former prime minister Nawaz Sharif was elected to the Pakistan parliament Saturday.

Sharif, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) chief, won from the National Assembly constituency NA-68, reported Radio Pakistan citing unofficial results even as vote counting for the general elections was underway.

The unofficial results had started pouring in while the counting of votes was on early Sunday.

Meanwhile, Sharif's PML-N said its chief had been elected to parliament from NA-68 Sargodha 5, in Punjab province, a media report said.

In a tweet, #PML-N chief Mian Nawaz Sharif said "his party after assuming power will work with full zeal and vigour for making a new Pakistan", reported Radio Pakistan.

"It is our desire to get absolute majority in NA so that we should not have to beg votes for formation of new government," Mian Nawaz Sharif.

In another tweet, Sharif claiming victory in the general elections pledged to the nation "that each promise made will be fulfilled".
